Beach and Surf Amenity Projects

Bluecoast’s engineers were engaged to complete a technical investigation into surf amenity at Duranbah Beach. The project utilised available data including historic bathymetry, dredge and pump rates from the Tweed Sand Bypassing; incorporated coastal monitoring imagery and videos; and collected surf amenity information. Key project responsibilities included:

  • Reporting of key coastal processes that impact surf quality and beach management issues at Duranbah Beach.

  • Quantify and record the historical and recent patterns of sand bank formation in both the nearshore and offshore zones that create the highest quality surf amenity at Duranbah Beach.

  • Evaluate the impact of the Tweed River entrance bar and how this influences surf quality.

  • Explore how previous sand placement strategies (pumping and dredging strategies) at Duranbah Beach associated with Tweed Sand Bypassing operations have historically impacted the surf quality.

  • Identify and map an idealised nearshore profile which seeks to maximise surfing amenity and can be used to provide a baseline against which changes in bathymetry caused by sand delivery can be compared.

Propose how sand placement strategies at Duranbah Beach could be managed with the aim of optimising surf quality.
