JAMES THOMPSON

Growing up surfing on the Sunshine Coast, sailing in Moreton Bay and fishing on K'gari, James developed a love for the ocean at a young age. This passion drew James towards a career in coastal science, first as a meteorologist and now as a coastal scientist on the Gold Coast.

James completed his Bachelor of Science in Mathematics at the University of Queensland in 2014 followed by a 7 year career in Meteorology as a tropical cyclone and severe thunderstorm forecaster for the Bureau of Meteorology. James is now studying a Ph.D. at the Griffith Coastal and Marine Research Centre on the Gold Coast investigating the coastal impacts of renewable energy from ocean waves. He hopes to apply this knowledge gained to sustainable solutions for coastal management.

Since joining Bluecoast in 2022, James has worked on projects from the Gold Coast to the South Pacific. This work has allowed James to develop and showcase his skills across metocean data analysis, coastal hazard assessments, GIS mapping and coastal modelling.
